Summer has come and gone and as we move from the beautiful crisp sunny days of autumn towards winter you want to think about keeping warm and healthy and make every attempt to avoid seasonal affective disorder (SAD) during the cold winter months.
There are many steps you can take to avoid the inevitable assortment of colds, coughs and flu that affect thousands of people at this time of the year. Here are some tips to help you through the winter to keep you healthy and rested over the cold months.
1. Eat a healthy diet with lots of fresh fruit and vegetables and don’t forget to include home made hearty vegetable soups that are wonderful for cold days and nights. Vegetable soups will provide you with the essential vitamins to support your immune system and being rich in anti-oxidants will also counter the affects on the body of free radicals.
2. Winter is the time of the year when you feel more inclined to indulge in eating the wrong foods. It is very easy to over-indulge in the wrong foods resulting in weight gain and putting the body at risk of becoming more acid than alkaline.
3. Keep up the exercise – don’t let the cold and rain put a holt to your exercise routine. Don your thermals and take the dog for a brisk walk on the beach or anywhere you can get some fresh air in your lungs. You will feel wonderfully exhilarated afterwards. If you are unable to get outdoors think about taking up an indoor activity such as the gym, pilates, dancing or whatever makes you feel good.
4. Winter is a time of rest – when you are tired you run the risk of depleting your immune system and this leaves you open to colds, flus and the risk of infection. There are plenty of natural remedies around if you have trouble sleeping.
5. Don’t wait to get the flu – prevention is better than cure – so look for natural products to strengthen your immune system. The flu can be debilitating and thousands of hours are lost annually with people being sick and unable to carry out their normal tasks.
6. If you do catch a cold make sure you have some zinc, vitamin C and echinacea to at least reduce the duration of symptoms.
7. It is not good to take antibiotics for a cold or flu – antibiotics are used to treat infections caused by bacteria – they will not assist in the recovery of colds and flus.
8. Keep socially active during the winter – don’t hide away. It’s hard sometimes to make the effort and much easier to stay at home but it can also be isolating and contribute to feelings of depression, especially if you are not going out to work and spend a lot of time on your own.
9. Get out and make the most of the warm winter sun – find a sheltered spot and let the sun warm your bones. Many people are affected by seasonal affective disorders every winter. The winter sun is marvellous therapy so try and get a daily dose if you can.
10. Make a list of everything you want to accomplish in the spring and get excited about the approach of it. Plan to make some changes, set some new goals and think about all the great activities you can do when spring arrives.
Support the physical well-being of your family during cold winter months winter naturally and without risk.
