Our post on winter allergies cautioned the potential connection between domestic chemicals and allergy increase. It also outlined the benefits of findiing natural pathways to supporting immune health and allergy relief.

Now, with the Spring/Summer seasonal shift upon us in New Zealand, the subject of allergies is once again looming large. And in response to requests following the last post, we will profile the most effective applications of essential oils and therapeutic plant products.

We aim to give you the best fighting chance against allergies and symptoms in the simplest and most straightforward ways.

Also, to make the information as useful as it can be, we have reduced it to its essence in an easy-to-follow FREE Allergy Support Reference Chart.

Our natural health remedies for immune health and allergy support

As a doctor of Naturopathy, I always consider the bigger picture of patient health and wellbeing. I highly recommend to anyone with on-going allergy issues that they review:

  • Environment
  • Stress-levels
  • Domestic and body-products
  • Food choices

Gentle regular exercise and an intake of at least two litres of water each day are also important standards for an optimum treatment outcome.

Essential oil products as effective natural allergy treatments

When asked "what are the best essential oil products for treating an allergy?" I will ultimately recommend clinical blends that offer the significant advantage of greater synergy. These are more straightforward than DIY-blending for daily use at home. However, I always like to give an idea of the range of essential oil possibilities as well.

There are sometimes different choices for adults and children as children are more sensitive and require less potency for similar effect.

Here is my list of the oils and floral waters that I use the most at the Absolute Essential Natural Health Clinics when prescribing for allergy support:

Eucalyptus Australiana

Everlasting

Lavender Spike

Peppermint

Thyme Thymol

Sweet Almond Oil

Lavender Floral Water

Alternative high-synergy, prescription blends:

Tips to aid decongestion, help calm inflammation and enhance immune health

Simple, quick inhalation techniques:

Adults:
Rub essential oil into hands, cup around nose and inhale. Use 2 drops of one, or 1 drop each of Lavender Spike, Eucalyptus Australiana and Thyme Thymol. Repeat as needed, up to six times a day.

Or, add 1 drop each of Lavender Spike, Eucalyptus Australiana, Peppermint, Thyme Thymol and Everlasting to a large mug of hot water, make a tent with a towel to inhale vapours. Repeat up to three times a day.

Children:
Inhale from hands or add to collar. Use 1 drop of Lavender Spike every two hours.

Creating safe therapeutic spaces with diffusion:

Adults:
Diffuse 2 drops of Peppermint, 3 Eucalyptus Australiana and 5 Lavender Spike. Replenish hourly.

Children:
Diffuse 5 drops of Lavender Spike and 3 Eucalyptus Australiana. Replenish hourly

Or, use 8 drops Baby Care: Nose & Chest. Repeat as required.

Making effective vapour rubs:

Adults:
Add 3 drops each of Lavender Spike, Eucalyptus Australiana and Everlasting to a palm serving of Almond Oil and apply to chest, neck, throat and back.

Add 3 drops each of Lavender Spike, Eucalyptus Australiana, Thyme Thymol and Everlasting to a palm serving of Almond Oil to feet and cover with socks at bedtime.

Children:
Add 3 drops each of Lavender Spike and Eucalyptus Australiana to a 1/2 palm serving of Almond Oil and apply to chest, neck, throat and back. Repeat twice daily.

honey

Other top essential oil tips:

Adults, for congestion
Use 1 drop Peppermint in a 1/8 teaspoon of active honey and place in mouth. Repeat as required.

Or, add 1 drop of Eucalyptus Australiana to finger or cotton swab and rub inside the nose (careful of sore skin).

Adults & Children:
Add same oils as for chest-rub to a humidifier (3 drops each). This is useful to aid sleep.

Or, use Sinus Clear for adults, or child alternative Baby Care: Nose & Chest by diffusion, inhalation or vapour rub treatment (use above directions with EO dosage). This provides optimum synergy of decongestant and anti-inflammatory while also having cleansing properties.

Support for stressed, itchy eyes

For dark rings under the eyes, apply 1 drop of Everlasting in a little Almond Oil to area (avoid inside the eye).

Adults & Children:
Use a spray application of Lavender Floral Water directly around and inside itchy eyes.

Eye Soothe is the high-synergy version of distilled floral water imbued with soluble properties of Lavender, Chamomile and Rose distillate. It is  very gentle (I recommend it for infants) and safe to drop or spray in and around eyes, or soak an organic cotton pad and rest on eyes.
