Every year, around this time, all it seems to take is a change in the weather and the bugs come calling. To be laid low with a sore throat, fever, chest infection or the sniffles is no fun at all. • During winter we tend to spend more time indoors and in contact with other people, which increases our chance of coming up against anything contagious (such as rhinovirus, coronavirus or influenza A and B).
• According to research, certain cold and flu viruses thrive and survive better in chillier, drier environments, and as a result, are able to infect more people.*
• Days are shorter this time of year, and lack of sunlight can lower our levels of vitamin D and melatonin, which may compromise our immune systems and decrease our ability to fight off viruses.
The first step toward staying healthy is to choose a healthy lifestyle.
Every part of your body, including your immune system, functions better when it is supported by healthy-living strategies such as no smoking, a diet high in fruit and vegetables, regular hydration and exercise, adequate sleep, good hygiene (eg, washing your hands frequently) and low stress. Some of my personal ‘winter wellness’ recipes, remedies and recommendations include:
At the first sign of a cough or sniffle, place 1 drop of Ginger (organic) and 1 drop of Peppermint (organic) on a chewable, high-dose Vitamin C tablet, chew well, and repeat up to 6 times daily. This will refresh your breath and stimulate your glandular system.

Kanuka (organic): Anti-oxidant, anti-viral, anti-germ, anti-inflammatory, cleansing, fortifying. Diffuse: 5-10 drops (or combine as above). Chest Rub: 3-5 drops (or combine as above) in 1 tsp carrier oil, such as our Almond Oil (organic).
Thyme Thymol (organic): Anti-oxidant, anti-viral, anti-germ, anti-inflammatory, calming, uplifting. Inhale: 1-3 drops (or combine as above) in hot water to ease congestion. Bath: 8 drops with 1 cup Epsom salt. Diffuse: 8 drops (or combine with 10 drops Eucalyptus) to purify air and kill airborne germs. Chest Rub: 3-5 drops (or combine as above) in 1tsp carrier oil, such as our Almond Oil (organic).
