A perennial aromatic plant originating in western Malesia. The grass grows to about 2 metres in height and has magenta-coloured base stems. It has been widely used in culinary applications, as a scent in soaps and as a natural insect repellent.

History
Cymbopogon wintrianus was originally grown in Borneo, Java and Sumatra with historical uses of citronella including the treatment of fever, intestinal parasites and digestive problems. In Chinese medicine, it has been used to ease rheumatic pain. In Brazilian folk medicine, it was used as a tea to counter anxiety. The aroma of citronella is said to have an uplifting and stimulating effect on the mind and is useful in treating headaches. Citronella essential oil has long been used for its proven, safe, natural insect repellent properties.

Uses
Insect repellent
Add 5-10 drops to a diffuser or apply in a carrier oil to the skin to repel unwanted insects.

Insect repellent for plants
Add 10-20 drops to a little warm water, shake vigorously and spray onto your edible greens, repeat for 3 days.

Cat repellent
Spray 20 drops diluted in 200 ml of warm water where cats scratch or urinate. Repeat as required.

Flea repellent
Add 20 drops of Citronella and 20 drops of Eucalyptus Australiana to warm water and spray on dogs stomach, armpits etc or bedding, carpet and furniture. Repeat as required.
Safety considerations
The scent of Citronella may be irritating to some asthmatics. If accidentially ingested do not induce vomiting, follow with Olive oil or milk and seek advice from a health specialist. Avoid contact with eyes - flush with water. Keep out of reach of children.
