History
Anise was first cultivated in Egypt and the Middle East around 4,000 years ago and was introduced to Europe for its medicinal value. It has a long history in treating issues of the stomach, relieving flatulence and respiratory conditions such as coughs and colds.
For centuries its aroma has flavoured many foods and beverages. In ancient Rome the seeds were included in a spice cake to aid digestion after a meal. It was also used to make anisaton - a Byzantine medicinal wine and a precursor to Ouzo.
