In the adventures of Ulysses, the hero is given a vial of essential Immortelle oil in order to hasten his recovery when shipwrecked on the island of Phaecia. It is traditionally known as Immortelle due to its preserving action on the skin. In European herbalism, preparations were made to treat respiratory conditions. It has been found to have potent anti-inflammatory and anti-histamine properties and is used to treat allergies.
