Also known as Portuguese Lavender, Lavender Spike is a strongly aromatic shrub growing up to 80cm tall and is native to the western Mediterranean region. It has the highest camphor content of the whole Lavender family. It boasts a rich history of use due to its popular fragrance, strong antiseptic qualities and its medicinal properties that encourage healthy respiratory function. Lavender Spike is very different therapeutically from Lavender Sweet and Lavender True.

History
Lavender Spike is native to the mountainous regions of the Mediterranean. Used for over 2,500 years, Lavender Spike is reported to have powerful antiseptic qualities as well as bactericidal, antiviral, decongestant and expectorant properties. It has been found to be particularly useful in enabling a healthy respiratory system. During the Middle Ages, monks distilled this oil to ease the chest constrictions of asthmatics. It has also been indicated in the treatment of rheumatism and as a key ingredient in stimulating skincare blends.

Uses
Coughs
Add 5-10 drops to a steam inhalation or into a carrier oil for a chest rub. Blends well with other 'respiratory' essential oils.

Sinus in babies
Add 1-3 drops to the collar of the baby's clothes or into a diffuser, refresh as required. Blends well with other 'respiratory' essential oils.

Respiratory problems
Add 1-3 drops to the collar of the baby's clothing or into a carrier like Untouched Body Hydration, rub on chest, repeat as required.

Body repair
Add 10-20 drops to a massage blend to ease body pains and injury. Repeat as required.
Allergies - Congestion (Adults)
Blend 1 drop with 1 drop each of Eucalyptus Australiana and Thyme Thymol, rub the mixture onto the palms of your hands. Cup your hands around your nose and breathe deeply. Repeat as needed up to 6 times a day.
Add 1 drop each of Lavender Spike, Eucalyptus Australiana, Peppermint, Thyme Thymol, and Immortella to a bowl of hot water. Create a tent with a towel over your head and inhale the vapours. Repeat up to three times a day.
Sore back
Rub 3-5 drops directly into the affected area.
Mix 3-5 drops into 1 tsp of a carrier oil, such as Almond Oil: Sweet or Apricot Kernel Oil: Virgin, and massage gently into the affected area.
Safety considerations
Due to high camphor content than other lavender oils, this oil is not suitable for burns and may irritate in direct skin applications. Safe in pregnancy. Safe to use with other medication when necessary. If accidentally ingested do not induce vomiting, follow with olive oil or milk and seek advice from a health specialist. Avoid contact with eyes - flush with water. Keep out of reach of children.
