From a family of fragrant grasses, also known as West Indian Lemongrass, Cymbopogon citratus is a tropical plant native to Southeast Asia. A celebrated culinary herb, Lemongrass also has a long history in medicinal applications due to its restorative, balancing and cleansing properties. Within the plant distillation, it contains 65–85% citral, which makes it useful as an effective insect repellent also.

Fragrance notes
Sharp, fresh with more than a hint of sweet lemon peel. Very subtle, spicy undertones.

History
Lemongrass plays an important role in traditional Indian medicine primarily in the treatment of fever and disease. It also appears in traditional Chinese medicine, indicated for rheumatism, headaches, colds and stomach pain. In the folk medicine of Brazil, it is believed to have hypnotic and anticonvulsant properties. It has been found to have several useful actions including analgesic, anti-microbial, antiseptic, astringent, bactericidal, sedative and nervine. Like its relatives Citronella, Palmarosa and Vetiver, it is also effective as an insect repellent.

Uses
Deodoriser and insect repellent
Diffuse directly into the immediate environment.

Fluid retention
Add 5 drops to a foot bath. Repeat as often as required.

Sports massage
Add 5-10 drops to your preferred massage carrier.

Fever and temperature regulation
Add 5-10 drops of Lemongrass to a tepid bath, or to Sweet Almond oil and rub all over the body, as required. Therapeutic baths should not exceed 15 minutes.
