Vetiver

Vetiveria zizanoides

Origin: Sri Lanka
Family: Poaceae
Part used: Root

Vetiver is a perennial bunchgrass which grows to 1.5 m. Unlike most grasses, which form horizontal spreading root systems, Vetiver's strong root system grows downwards to about 3 metres in depth. From the Tamil word meaning 'root that is dug up', Vetiver has been used to create perfumes, lotions and soaps. It is used to treat acne and sores due to its antiseptic qualities. It has also become popular for its fortifying and grounding qualities in the treatment of emotional stress.

History
India, the native home of Vetiver, discovered the aromatic and medicinal qualities of this hardy root about 3,000 years ago. Due to its fixative properties, Vetiver is used in most high-end perfume brands available today. It has also been employed in traditional medicine throughout South Asia, Southeast Asia and West Africa. The root and its essential oil were used to alleviate thirst, heatstroke, fevers and headaches. It was believed to relieve inflammatory disorders of the joints and skin. In Oriental medicine, Vetiver has been said to nourish, calm and uplift the emotions due to its strengthening and grounding properties. The circulatory and immune systems have also been linked as beneficiaries of Vetiver therapeutic support. Vetiver has also been promoted as a relaxant and an aphrodisiac.
