5 natural ways to take on winter

Winter is a beautiful time of year, but it brings with it the inevitable coughs, colds and flu. Thankfully, therapeutic-grade essential oils can help us through this chilly time. They provide instant relief, boost immunity and speed up recovery.

Here are our top 5 essential oil recommendations and a few tips on how to use them. You’ll feel better in no time:

Peppermint

Mentha piperita

Peppermint oil is one of our all-time favourites. Our founder, Dr. Bo Hendgen, doesn’t go anywhere without it! It is versatile and immediately effective. It’s fabulous at clearing your head and sinuses and is perfect for sorting out headaches (hangovers included).

Add 1-2 drops into a ceramic bowl with hot water and hold your head over it for a few minutes. Breathe deeply under a towel to intensify.

Apply 1 drop on the back of your hand, then lick. This will clear your sinuses and freshen your breath instantly. Repeat as needed, but no more than eight times per day.

Thyme Thymol

Thymus vulgaris

Thyme Thymol oil is a powerhouse of immune stimulant compounds, and it makes germs run for the hills.

Add 5 drops to a hot bath or foot bath. Repeat daily for 5 days to nip a cold in the bud. Complement the remedy with 5 drops of Eucalyptus or Lavender Spike to enhance the scent.

Rub 1-2 drops onto the soles of your feet before bed and let it work its magic while you sleep.

Eucalyptus

Eucalyptus australiana

Eucalyptus oil is a timeless winter respiratory remedy famous for easing coughs, chest congestion, scratchy throats, and helping to enhance immunity.

Add 5 drops to the sole of each foot, put on warm socks, and go to bed. You will taste it within 5 minutes - that’s how quickly it goes to work throughout your body.

Add 10 drops to your bath or diffuser to purify the air and ease cold symptoms.

Tea tree oil

Melaleuca alternifolia

Tea Tree is super effective at helping your immune system destroy germs.

Add 5 drops to your bath or diffuser to purify the air and kill germs. Add 5 drops of Eucalyptus oil and 5 drops of Lavender Spike for even greater efficacy and an uplifting scent.

Add 10 drops to a bath or diffuser to aid respiratory and immune function. Repeat for at least 5 consecutive days.

Chamomile Roman

Anthemis nobilis

Kind and gentle, this oil soothes aches and pains, helps to ease fevers, and invites a quality sleep.

Add 2 drops to a hot bath with 5 drops of Lavender Spike. Soak for 15 minutes, then hop into bed with a hot water bottle. Cosy.

Add 2 drops to pulse points before bed or when sleep is disturbed to support restful sleep.

Get a head start on winter and breathe easy. And remember, even though you feel like you could happily sit there forever, therapeutic baths should never be longer than 15 minutes. This is because the body releases toxins into the water that can be reabsorbed after this time. For this reason, we don’t recommend sharing baths when you are feeling sick or stressed, either.
