Cymbopogon wintrianus was originally grown in Borneo, Java and Sumatra with historical uses of citronella including the treatment of fever, intestinal parasites and digestive problems. In Chinese medicine, it has been used to ease rheumatic pain. In Brazilian folk medicine, it was used as a tea to counter anxiety. The aroma of citronella is said to have an uplifting and stimulating effect on the mind and is useful in treating headaches. Citronella essential oil has long been used for its proven, safe, natural insect repellent properties.
