The Blue Gum, also known as the Tasmanian Blue Gum and Southern Blue Gum, is a flowering tree endemic to Tasmania and Southern Australia. It can grow up to 70 metres tall and forms a woody swelling (lignotuber) at the base which helps protect the tree when there are forest fires. It prefers moist soil conditions but can thrive in dry areas with poor soil. The wood, leaves and flowers have long been used by indigenous communities in Australia for medicinal and cultural purposes.

History
Eucalyptus oil is traditionally used by indigenous communities in Australia for skin problems like insect bites and sunburn. It has been commonly indicated for treating colds, respiratory ailments, as well as muscle, nerve and joint pain. It is also known to have strong germicidal, antibacterial and analgesic properties.

Uses
Muscle tone
Mix 5 drops with massage cream or Olive oil and rub vigorously onto the affected area. Use as required.

Sinuses
Add 5 drops to a steam inhalation and breathe deeply for 10 minutes.

Chest and respiration
Add 10 drops to 1/4 teaspoon of massage cream or carrier oil and apply 3 times a day around the throat and onto the chest and back. Especially beneficial at night time.
Safety considerations
May be irritating to sensitive skin. The half dose is recommended for children and the elderly. Safe during pregnancy. Safe to use with other medication when necessary. If accidentally ingested do not induce vomiting, follow with olive oil or milk and seek advice from a health specialist. Avoid contact with eyes - flush with water. Keep out of reach of children.
