Ravensar

Ravensara aromatica

Origin: Madagascar
Family: Lauraceae
Part used: Plant

A member of the laurel family and originates in Madagascar. The leaves and twigs have a camphorous aroma similar to eucalyptus. Its aroma is often characterised as very distinctive. It's been used as a fragrance material in perfumery and as an antiseptic, antibacterial, expectorant and anti-viral in natural and traditional medicine. It's appreciated for strengthening the immune system. Being studied outside of its original location is relatively new for Ravensara aromatica, and much is yet to be understood.
Overview
Fragrance notes
Spicy, herbal, fruity and camphoraceous aroma. Hints of light musk and dry wood.

Blending notes
Blends well with: Fir Balsam, Spruce, Mandarin, Cypress and Frankincense.
History
The evergreen havozo tree from the Indian Ocean island offers us the very source of Ravensar distilled oil. The use of the tree was largely localised to its origins until recent times. The seeds were traditionally used by the islanders in cooking and the bark was used to make rum. There is some evidence to suggest that 18th Century France saw some medicinal application of Ravensar oil, but it is still a relative newcomer to aromatic and contemporary medicine. Its healing and tonic properties have only been established since the revival of aromatherapy in the 1980s.
